“Kaunas Jazz” Festival

March 24, 2007 at 3:13 pm (Uncategorized)

Welcome back to the 17th Kaunas Jazz Festival.

Kaunas Jazz is Lithuania’s biggest and stylistically most diverse jazz festival. Its main ambition is to combine quality, diversity, and popular appeal. Since its outset with Lithuanian independence, Kaunas Jazz has attracted the biggest names in jazz as well as encouraging local artists, and focussing on the city community. This has been well directed through Jonas Jucas, himself a lifelong servant of Kaunas and music, with a network that has brought Kaunas Jazz throughout Lithuania and Europe.

Cosmic Farm – Rob Wasserman, Craig Erickson, T Lavitz, Jeff Sipe

April 23, 2006 at 1:18 am (Uncategorized)

Cosmic Farm
The rise in the popularity of jam bands might logically be expected to be the catalyst for a wider audience for instrumental rock and fusion. So there has been a bit of a resurgence in the number of releases in the genre. Jazz-rock fusion enjoyed its heyday in the 1970s, at the same time that art rock was attracting stadium sized audiences. Music fans seemed to have a longer attention span then, and there was a greater receptivity to instrumental music. The rise of punk rock helped to kill most of that in the late 1970s, with music videos destroying any attention span young fans might have had. Fusion, nevertheless, has survived as a kind of niche genre, and enjoyed some commercial success with Pat Metheny and Béla Fleck. But the jam band scene, in which younger audiences are re-discovering that you don’t have to have vocals and lyrics on all your music, has helped to pave the way for a bit of a fusion renaissance, with a steady trickle of worthwhile recordings from both established artists and some up-and-coming bands.

Aquarium Rescue Unit – ‘The Calling’

April 23, 2006 at 12:01 am (Uncategorized)

Aquarium Rescue Unit

Since the mid 1990s, jam bands have really come into their own. Thanks to a combination of the rediscovery of the Grateful Dead by a younger generation just before Jerry Garcia’s passing, and the surprising popularity of Phish, who seemed to inherit a fair portion of the Dead’s audience, rock groups known for their extended instrumental improvisations have become a genre unto themselves, with jam band festivals and emerging groups appearing all over the country. Because being a jam band is relatively easy in principle, the ranks of jam bands are filled with some second-rate groups who can get up on stage and noodle away at their instruments, which may satisfy audiences who listen with, let say, some chemical modification. But the jam band field has also attracted groups such as the String Cheese Incident that demonstrate outstanding musicianship, often considerably better than the groups that started doing that kind of thing in the 1960s.

Alessandro Benvenuti – ‘Sonic Design’

April 22, 2006 at 10:57 pm (Uncategorized)

Alessandro Benvenuti

In today’s musical climate the idea of a new wave of stunning guitarists seems absurd (the scene died didn’t it?). But, as Alessandro Benvenuti proves on ‘Sonic Design’ – a revolution is coming.

Alessandro Benvenuti has done it all; he’s a top clinician at the Guitar C.A.P. section of the International Music Institute in Rome (www.imionline.it), session guitarist for Circe Digital Studios, columnist for Axe Magazine and most importantly writer of a fabulous debut CD ‘Sonic Design’ .

Dream Theater – 20th anniversary

April 20, 2006 at 10:18 pm (Dream Theater)

Dream Theater

Dream Theater, now touring in celebration of their 20th anniversary and the release of their eighth studio album, appropriately titled, Octavarium, have etched for themselves a very unique place in the tomes of musical history.

For the uninitiated, Dream Theater can be introduced as the favorite sons of modern progressive music and the undisputed standard bearers for the genre. Their virtuosic musicianship, complex song forms and arranging style, frequent use of compound and odd meter, intelligent and often introspective lyrical content, and sometimes epic length songs fulfill all expectations of the demanding genre (no dragons and wizards, but hey…).
